Building Trades

Houses, schools, factories, office buildings, and other structures all need to be built and/or renovated to provide basic human comforts such as water, electricity, heating, and air conditioning. This program introduces the basics of building science. With the recent increase in building projects in southern Michigan, the job outlook is bright for hard-working, trained, and certified construction professionals.

Program Description

Students start by learning basic safety procedures and earning their 10-hour OSHA certificate. They quickly learn to use hand and power tools safely and learn the basics of building science – foundations, framing, exterior, and interior finishes. Students also learn valuable industry skills such as estimating, design, building permits, and job interviewing skills. Students will explore other construction industry professions such as construction manager, electrician, plumbing, and HVAC tech.

To Be Successful

Successful students will have fundamental math skills in measuring, fractions, and decimals as well as the ability to balance social and work interactions. They enjoy building projects and physical activity. Students in this program like to work with their hands, follow directions well, have good work habits, and work well either independently or in a team.

Scott Biggs

Instructor

Scott Biggs brings more than three decades of diverse experience in the construction industry. Throughout his 35+ year career, he has worked across multiple sectors, including residential and commercial construction, facilities maintenance, and lumber retail. Scott has also demonstrated a strong entrepreneurial spirit, having successfully operated his own business within the construction field.

His passion for the industry is matched by his dedication to education. Scott is currently a part-time professor at Washtenaw Community College, where he teaches Construction Technology courses, helping to prepare the next generation of trades professionals. In addition to his college-level teaching, he actively supports career development at the high school level through adult education classes and summer career camps offered by the Lenawee Intermediate School District.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kaplan University, equipping him with a solid foundation in business management—an essential skill in today’s construction environment. He also earned a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teaching Certificate from Western Michigan University, which qualifies him to deliver hands-on, industry-relevant instruction in career-focused programs. His deep knowledge and approachable teaching style make him a valuable resource for students pursuing careers in construction.

Dylan Secord

Dylan Secord has accumulated over 15 years of experience in the building trades, working in both the commercial and residential construction industries. His journey began as a carpenter, mastering both rough and finish carpentry. Over time, he advanced to the role of lead carpenter, taking on more responsibility and playing a key role in the successful completion of a wide variety of projects.

Dylan’s experience extends beyond hands-on construction. He has been involved in interior finishing, construction sales, project estimating, and small business ownership, giving him a well-rounded understanding of how construction projects come together from start to finish. His broad expertise enables him to teach not only the technical skills but also the planning and management aspects that are vital in today’s construction careers.

In his instructional role, Dylan brings real-world insights into the classroom, helping students understand what it takes to succeed on the job site and in the business side of construction. His practical knowledge, combined with a down-to-earth teaching style, helps students build both confidence and competence.
