Health: Nursing Preparation

Nursing continues to be a high-demand career with good pay and good working environments such as hospitals, doctors’ offices and care facilities. The need for nurses is expected to grow for a number of reasons; including an emphasis on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions and increased demand for healthcare services from the baby boomer population as they live longer and lead more active lives.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program for senior students teaches introductory nursing skills such as direct patient care, monitoring patient progress, drug dosage calculations, in depth anatomy and physiology and hospital operations. Classes and labs are held at ProMedica Bixby Hospital as well as the LISD TECH Center. Students who complete the necessary classroom and clinical hours may take the state CNA certification test.

Eastern Michigan University classes are embedded within this program. Students who have college credits on their application often have a competitive advantage over other candidates for college admission and job placements.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Students need a 2.5 G.P.A. or higher, strong science, English, communication and research skills, as well as a compassion for others. Students are required to pass a physical, TB test, criminal background check and must be current with Hepatitis B, Tetanus, MMR, Varicella and seasonal flu vaccines before going on clinical experiences.

Textbook reading level: college level.
